University of Akron Trombone Studio

Welcome to the University of Akron Trombone Studio!


The trombone studio at Akron is comprised of graduate and undergraduate trombonists pursuing degrees in music performance and education. Qualified undergraduate students receive scholarships and financial aid for both merit and academic achievement. Additionally, Akron offers a graduate trombone teaching assistantship (tuition and a stipend) which includes trombone studio responsibilities and performing in the graduate brass quintet.

Performance Opportunities

All trombonists have the opportunity to participate in the Akron Trombone Choir, an active ensemble that regularly performs recitals as well as outreach concerts at exciting locations such as the zoo, museums, and sporting events. In addition, students regularly get to participate in masterclasses with world-renowned musicians and travel as a studio to events such as orchestral performances, trombone recitals, and trombone festivals.

 

Students at Akron have the opportunity to perform with the Wind Symphony, Symphony Band, Concert Band, Orchestra, Jazz Band, Basketball Band, and “Ohio’s Pride” Marching Band. Our music education department currently has a 99% job placement rate. In addition, trombonists from the University Akron have gone on to have successful careers  in the music field.

Audition Information

Undergraduate Audition: Suggested

Accompanist: Not needed

Performed from memory: Not required

Length of Audition: 15 minutes

Recording or Zoom Audition Accepted: Yes

Repertoire: Any solo from the Ohio Class "A" Solo and Ensemble list (or comparable) solo. An etude of your choice. Major scales (one octave) up to four sharps or four flats.

 

Graduate Audition: Required

Accompanist: Not Needed

Performed from memory: No

Length of Audition:

Recording or Zoom Audition Accepted: Yes

Repertoire: Two contrasting solo works and an etude. In addition, prepare 3 contrasting orchestral excerpts.

Trombone Audition Requirements

Undergraduate

Audition: Required. Auditions can be individually scheduled, held via zoom, or held on one of the School of Music Audition Days.

Accompanist: Not Needed

Repertoire: Choose two pieces (solos or etudes) of contrasting style.

 

Graduate

Audition: Required. Auditions can be individually scheduled, held via zoom, or held on one of the School of Music Audition Days.

Accompanist: Not Needed
